# Running: pace → tempo (sources, 2026-10-12)

## What the research supports
**Cadence by pace (experienced runners, mean steps per minute).** Leacox A, Fashingbauer L, Ferguson T, Zajakowski A, Baum B, Reinking M. *The Effect of Running Speed on Cadence and Running Kinetics.* Int J Sports Phys Ther. 2025;20(7):957-963. doi:10.26603/001c.140544. 30 runners, 15+ miles a week. Means only; no SD reported.

| Pace (per mile) | Mean cadence |
|---|---|
| 10:00 | 169 |
| 9:30 | 170 |
| 9:00 | 171 |
| 8:30 | 172 |
| 8:00 | 174 |
| 7:30 | 176 |
| 7:00 | 178 |

**Matching music to steps.** Buhmann J, Moens B, Van Dyck E, Dotov D, Leman M. *Optimizing beat synchronized running to music.* PLoS One. 2018;13(12):e0208702. Matched one beat per step (BPM = steps per minute). Cites earlier work: runners fell into sync on their own when the tempo was within about 2.5% of their cadence.

**People vary more than pace does.** Elite ultramarathoners in a University of Michigan study (Burns) ranged from 155 to 203 steps per minute; same-height runners still varied a lot. (University press release; check the paper before quoting numbers.)

## What this means for the design
1. **Pace barely moves cadence.** 10:00 to 7:00 per mile changes the average by only about 9 steps per minute. Differences between people are bigger than that. So a pace gives a starting point, not an answer.
2. **The label can say it, as an estimate:** "10-minute mile · about 170 BPM." Source: Leacox et al. 2025 (169 at 10:00/mile). "About" is required.
3. **Adjusting matters more than the starting number.** "Faster" / "Slower" in small steps (about 4 BPM, roughly the 2.5% sync window at 170).
4. **Best input, when available:** the runner's own cadence (from a watch or a tap-along), not pace.
5. **Not used yet:** half-time matching (songs at half the step rate) is common advice in running blogs but I didn't find primary research. Don't build on it without a source.
6. **Limits:** experienced runners only; beginners may run at a lower cadence. Means only.
